All living things are made up of tiny cells. All cells have: Cell Membrane - Thin skin that holds the cell together. Controls what enters and exits the cell. Cytoplasm - Watery fluid in which the other structures are suspended. Nucleus - Controls the cells activities and division of cells. Small vacuoles - Used for temporary storage of food and wastes. Plant cells also have: Chloroplasts - Contain chlorophyll which is needed for photosynthesis. Cell wall - Tough structure outside cell membrane. Give cell structure and support. Large vacuole - Stores sugar, water and waste. There are many types of cells: Muscle Cells - Allow movement Red blood cells - Carry oxygen White blood cells - Defend against disease Nerve cells - Carry messages A tissue is a group of similar cells with a special function (e.g muscle, nerve). An organ is a group of different tissues that work together to carry out a special function (e.g the heart, ear, stomach, lung).A system is a group of organs working together (e.g the digestive system).
