MEHETABEL WRIGHT (Suffered abuse at the hands of her father and was in a very unhappy marriage. Reason for such an aggressive tone throughout the poem?) Wedlock. A Satire.
Line 5. 'terms to curse thee shall I find.' - enraged tone, specific. Line 2. 'whom heaven and hell alike disclaim.' - language of the pulpit to condemn wedlock. Line 9. 'lend me for a while your rage.' - angry at her place in society. Line 7. 'my verse excel in spite.' - trying to out-rant men. 18th Century full of contrasts.
