READING COMPREHENSION

Understanding a written text means extracting the required information from it as efficiently as possible.

We apply different reading strategies.

There are two main reasons for reading: 1.- Reading for pleasure, 2.-Reading for information

Intensive reading

Skimming is reading a text quickly to find out the general theme, topic or meaning.

It's useful for text that don´t need a lot of detailed attention.

To skim a text, you can:

1.- Read the title

2.- Read the headings and subheadings

3.- Look for important information (such as dates, names, and unusual words)

4.- Read the conclusion

Scanning ais reading a text quickly in order to find specific information.

It's useful for answering exam, the objective is to search relevant words.

To scan a text, you can:

1.- Let your eyes run quickly over the text

2.- Keep the word you are looking for in your mind while searching

3.- Skip over text that doesn’t contain the information you’re looking for

4.- Use your finger to run along the lines of the text

Definition: Rapid reading of large quantities of material or longer reading for general understanding.

Purpose: a lifelong reading habit, enjoyment, and general reading skills.

1. Long texts/ books.

Definition: Reading in detail with specific learning aims and tasks

Purpose: detailed meaning, developing reading skills vocabulary and grammar knowledge.
