Statistics part one
Fichas del conjunto (34)
- 1What is inferential statistics?Measures reliability of conclusions about a population based on a sample or whole
- 2What is a descriptive study?Data is collected from the entire (or sample) of the population and the results are merely summarized
- 3What are the two extremes of inferential studies?Observational and designed experiments
- 4Define an observational study. There is no researcher influence, they just watch and take notes
- 5What is a designed experiment?Researcher designs conditions while employing control, randomization, and replication
- 6What is an outcome variable?Measured at the end to determine result.
- 7What is control? When methods are used to minimize or eliminate the effects of extraneous variables on the outcome variable
- 8What are the control methods?Placebo vs. treatment
Multiple treatment levels
Block design
Inclusion/exclusion
Pretest/posttest - 9What is block design?Groups are based on similar characteristics
- 10What is an extraneous variable?A variable not of interest that may affect the outcome variable.
- 11What is sampling?Whenever a population is split into separate samples.
- 12How does a sample get randomized?Randomly assigned to treatment groups
- 13What is replication? The number of experimental units is sufficiently large enough so that differences are detected when they exist.
- 14What is randomization?Experimental unites randomly assigned to treatment groups to avoid selection bias
- 15What is the variable difference between observational studies and deigned experiments?Obs: association between variables
Design: causal relationship - 16What is the sampling process?Selecting objects from population for inclusion in the study
- 17What is the goal of sampling? To have a representative sample of the population.
- 18What is simple random sampling?High chance of having a representative sample, every object has equal chance of being selected
- 19What is systematic random sampling?K=N/n where N is poplulation and n is sample size
Randomly select an object 1 thru k, pick every kth object to add to sample size - 20What is a stratified random sample?Population is separated by characteristics that you think impact the outcome
Randomly take a proportional sample from these groups.
Sample size-n
nPi - 21What is cluster sampling? The population is in clusters, groups are randomly selected enough to obtain desired sample size, every object sampled in entire sample groups
- 22What is convenience sampling? The sample was convenient to obtain
- 23What is an experimental unit?Object upon which the researcher acts
- 24What is a characteristic?Property of experimental unit that researcher cannot manipulate
- 25Define factorVariable that researcher manipulates
- 26Define factor levelValues of factor used in the study
- 27What are the treatment optionsOne factor or multi factor studies
- 28What is experimental design?Completely randomized design or randomized block design where exp. units are randomly assigned across all treatment groups
- 29What is a variable?Characteristic that may change object to object
- 30Define discrete data:Collection of all possible values, or a count
- 31Define continuous data:Collection of data in an interval or set of intervals, or a measure
- 32What is ordinal data?Place in an ordered data set that lacks scale
- 33What is frequency distribution?A function that shows the number of instances in which a variable takes each of its possible values
- 34How is relative frequency distribution calculated?Part /whole
