- 1managed retreat/coastal realignment (Not really a form of soft engineering)This is used on areas prone to flooding by the sea in order to take pressure off surrounding areas of the coast line and create new habitats for wildlife.
- 2dune regenerationThis is used to act as a physical sea-land barrier to absorb wave energy and water so that more delicate areas behind receive less.
- 3beach nourishmentTo replenish sand lost from the beach by long-shore drift and as such keep the area protected by a beach.
- 4beach re-profilingReplenishes the beaches back sand bank with sediment that was pulled down during the winter stormy weather.
