Functions of protein? •Growth of new cells •Repair of damaged cells •Makes hormones, enzymes and antibodies
What is the composition of fat? Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen These are broken up into glycerol and three fatty acids
Classification of Fats? Animal/ Saturated Vegetable/ Unsaturated
Sources of Fat? •Animal- Butter, suet, lard, meat, oily fish, eggs, cheese, cream •Vegetable- Margarine, nuts, cereals and oils
Functions of Fat? •Production of heat and energy •Prevention of heat loss •Protection of delicate organs •Delays Hunger •Adds flavour to the diet
Dangers with Overeating? •Obesity •Saturated Fats may block blood vessels with cholesterol which results in strokes and heart problems
Benefits of Unsaturated fats •Reduce Cholesterol •Omega 3 + omega 6 fatty acids reduce the risk of heart disease. Omega oils improve brain function
What is cholesterol The build up of saturated Fats in the archerys
Composition of carbohydrates? Sugar, starch and cellulose ( also known as roughage or dietary fibre) These are broken up into simple sugar units e.g glucose
Sources of Carbohydrates ? •Sugar- Jam, cakes, biscuits, chocolate, table sugar •Starch - Pasta, Bread, potatoes, cereals •Fibre- Wholemeal cereals, fruit, veg, seeds and nuts
Functions of Carbohydrates? •Supplies the body with heat and energy •Extra Carbohydrates are stored as Fat which insulates the body •Fibre helps digest food
Explain Cellulose Also known as roughage/ dietary fibre. Not digested but aids the digestion of other nutrients by helping to push food through the intestines (peristalsis). Also helps prevent constipation and diseases.
Explain sugars Too much sugar= tooth decay and overweight. Many products contain hidden sugars e.g sauce mixes. Sugar may be known as glucose, dextrose and sucrose.
What are empty kilocalories? Foods which only contain sugar
