Role of Water in Biology Found in all living organisms = cytoplasm (all organisms), Xylem (plants), tissue fluid and blood (animals)
Properties of Water -Molecules are dipolar -Hydrogen is slightly +ve and Oxygen slightly -ve -   ∴ H₂O molecules can form hydrogen bonds with each other (attracted to each other)
Role of Water in Living Organisms Habitat, Solvent, Hydrostatic pressure, Homeostasis
Explain the role of Habitat in living organisms Habitat - Water has high specific heat capacity (lots of heat needed before evaporates, due to the presence of hydrogen bonds between water molecules) -When water freezes it is less dense and floats Insulates the water beneath preventing it from freezing -Both cases the water remains a liquid state and provide a habitat for organisms
Explain the role of Solvent as a property of water which useful for living organisms Solvent as H₂O molecules are dipolar they can separate out solutes based on their charge. -+ve hydrogen side mixes with -ve solute (and vice versa) -This is useful in cytoplasm of all cells and supports the reaction of these solutes, it is also useful in the process of diffusion/active transport -useful in the transport such as blood and phloem
Explain in full detail the role of water for Hydrostatic Pressure and Homeostasis Hydrostatic Pressure -When pressurised can provide a strong physical pushing force -Used in Mass Flow (where water carries a large amount of substances e.g tissue fluid in capillaries) -Help to support turgidity in Plants Homeostasis -Mammals and Humans control body temp by sweating. -Sweat on the skin when evaporates uses heat and cools the individual -As sweat/water made up of hydrogen bonds has a stable structure, requires a large amount o heat for it to evaporate -Laten Heat of Vaporisaton
