- 1What stain is this? and what colour does it produce?Haematoxylin (blue) and Eosin (pink) (H+E)
Nuclear chromatin - purple + blue
Cytoplasm,collagen, keratin, erythrocytes - pink
Cartlidge - bluish
- 2What is an artefact?Substance/Structure which is not normally present in the tissue (damaged tissue during prep of the tissue)
- 3Aldehyde-fuchsinElastic fibres, mast cell granules, mucus -deep purple

- 4What is the magnification equation?Magnification = size of image/actual size of object
- 5How do you tell the difference between an electron microscope reading to a light microscope?Electron microscope will only produce black and white images.
- 6Difference between histology and pathologyHistology studies the bodies cells/tissue and how they are organised.
Pathology studies the abnormal/diseased tissue - 7Steps involved to process tissue1. Specimen acquisition
2. Fixation - preservation
3. Dehydration - remove water
4. Embedding - stiffen to cut
5. Section
6. Stain - 8What stain is this and what does it stain/the colour?Masson's trichrome stain
RED = muscle + keratin
PINK = cytoplasm
BLUE/GREEN = collagen + bone
BLACK = cell nuclei
- 9What are the 4 basic tissue types1. Epithelium (morphology - look)- continuous lining, repairs/renews, has tight junctions, sits on basement membrane
2. Connective tissue (look)
- Support tissue (physical/metabolic) - looks diverse, acts as a ground, fibroblast fibres.
3. Muscle tissue - function
- Smooth - visercal, in all organs, slow and long contracting muscle
- Skeletal - support - strength
- Cardiac
4. Neural tissue (function) - nerve cell, peripheral, central ganglia, cell bodies
