- 1What is an algorithm?A series of steps that can be followed to complete a task.
- 2What is Decomposition?breaking down a problem into smaller steps in order to make the problem easier to solve.
- 3What is Abstraction?Removing unnecessary details from a problem in order to solve it.
- 4What is a Simulation?Building a model of a problem and finding out what happens under different circumstances.
- 5What is the Problem? The need or requirement we have to meet.
- 6What is a sequence? The matter of writing the steps down in order they need to happen.
- 7Give an example of SelectionIF...THEN...ELSE
- 8Give an example of IterationFOR...ENDFOR
REPEAT...UNTIL
WHILE...ENDWHILE - 9How does Linear Search work? When the data is unsorted, the only sensible option is to start at the beginning and look at every item until you find the one you want.
- 10How does Binary Search work?It repeatedly divides in half the portion of the data list that could contain the required data item.
- 11Which type of search is better for a few data items?Linear
- 12Which type of search is the most efficient?Binary
- 13For which search can data be unsorted?Linear
- 14How does bubble sort work?It works by repeatedly going through the list to be sorted comparing each pair of adjacent elements. If the elements are in the wrong order they are swapped.
- 15Why are flags sometimes used in bubble sort?A flag is tested on each pass so that if no swaps are made during a pass through the items, no more unnecessary passes are made through an already sorted list.
- 16How does merge sort work? The list is successively divided in half, forming two sub lists, until each sub list is of one length. Each pair of sub lists is repeatedly merged to produce new sorted sub lists until there is only one sub list remaining. As each pair of lists is merged, they are merged in order.
- 17Which type of sort is best for a few items?Bubble sort
- 18Which type of sort is the most efficient?Merge sort.
- 19Which sort requires more memory?Merge sort
(for the sub lists) - 20Which type of sort is more difficult for an inexperienced programmer to implement?Merge sort
- 21Which type of sort takes more time to execute ?Bubble sort.
- 22What is an identifier?A unique name given to a variable to identify what the variable is.
- 23What is a variable?A value that can change, depending on conditions or on information passed to the program
- 24What is a data type?A particular type of data item defined by the values it can take.
- 25What is an integer?A whole number
e.g. 4 - 26How much memory does an integer take up?2 or 4 bytes.
- 27What is a real / float ?A number with a fractional part
e.g. 3.14159 - 28How much memory does a real / float take up?4 or 8 bytes.
- 29What is a char / character?A single character, where the character can be any letter, digit, punctuation mark or symbol that can be typed.
- 30How much memory does a char / character take up?1 byte.
- 31What is a string?Zero or more characters
e.g. dog - 32How much memory does a string take up?1 byte per character in the string.
- 33What is a Boolean?A Boolean variable has the value of true or false.
- 34How much memory does a Boolean take up?1 byte.
- 35What is a constant?A value that remains the same while the program runs.
- 36When are constants declared in the program? At the start.
- 37What are the two benefits of declaring the constant at the start of the program?1) When the value changes, you only have to edit it in one place
2) The code will be easier to read and understand - 38Why, in Python, is the constant written in upper case?So it is clear that the value wont change in the code.
- 39What is variable declaration? It allows you to define the data type or object type of the variable.
- 40What are operations? They are things you can do to specific types of data.
- 41What is concatenation? The joining of two strings together.
- 42What is a function?A named section of a program that performs a specific task.
- 43What is a procedure? It is a set of coded instructions that tell a computer how to run a program or calculation.
- 44What is selection?A section of code that will only run if the condition is met.
- 45What is nested iteration? When a loop is used inside another loop.
- 46Give an example of selection.IF statements.
- 47What is Robust code?Code which will not result in the program crashing due to an unexpected user error.
- 48Give an example of definite iteration.FOR...ENDFOR loops.
- 49Give an example of indefinite iteration.WHILE...ENDWHILE loops.
REPEAT...UNTIL loops. - 50What is definite iteration? The number of times the loop is to be repeated is defined.
- 51What is indefinite iteration? The number of times the loop will be repeated depends on the loop condition being TRUE.
- 52Which example of indefinite iteration has the condition at the start of the loop?WHILE...ENDWHILE loop.
- 53Which example of indefinite iteration has the condition at the end of the loop?REAPEAT...UNTIL loop.
- 54What is DIV?The whole number given when numbers are divided.
- 55What is MOD?The remainder given when numbers are divided.
- 56What is NOT?NOT reverses the input
e.g if the input is 1, the output is 0 - 57What is AND?When two data items are the same, the data item is outputted.
- 58What is OR?When one or more of the data items are correct, the data item is outputted.
