Pregunta Respuesta
How many groups are there in the periodic table? 18
What is chemistry? Chemistry is the study of how atoms arrange themselves and rearrange themselves in various ways.
What does neutrally charged mean? Neutrally charged means that it has the same amount of protons and electrons.
What is an element? The term element refers to the type of atoms they are, if there is only one type of symbol it is an element.
What is a pure element? A pure element means that all the elements present are of the same type.
What is a molecule? When atoms bond together in small clusters, they can be made of different or similar atoms.
How is a molecule formed? A molecule is formed when two or more atoms join together chemically.
What is a mixture? Mixtures are formed when different compounds or elements are put together without bonding.
What is a compound? When atoms of at least 2 different elements are bonded together.
What is an ion? An atom that is electrically charged. The number of protons and electrons is different.
What is an ionic compound? An ionic compound is 2 elements that are bound together and they're charged.
What is an isotope? Isotopes are created when the number of neutrons is different in each version of the element.
What is a neutron? Not positive or negative
What is an electron? Have negative and on outer shell
What is a proton? Have a positive mark and in the nucleus.
What is an electron shell? Have electrons on them. As each shell gets further from the nucleus, its energy level increases and the shell gets larger (and is able to hold more electrons).
What are the different electron shell layers? The 1st shell (inner shell) can only hold a maximum of 2 electrons. The 2nd shell can hold up to 8 electrons until it is full. The 3rd shell can actually hold 18 electrons but it only fills up 8 electrons before the next shell starts filling.
What is the outer shell on an electron called? A valence
What is a nucleus? The tiny but heavy centre of the atom is called the nucleus. It contains two types of particles: neutron and protons.
How do you work out the number of neutrons? number of neutrons = (mass number - number of protons)
How do you work out the number of electrons? the number of electrons = the number of proton
How do you work out the number of uncharged atoms? For uncharged atoms, the number of electrons must equal the number of protons.
What is the electron configuration? A listing of the number of electrons in each shell is called the electron configuration.
What happens as electrons gain more energy? They orbit further from the nucleus.
How much energy is emitted if there is a red light? If red light is emitted, a small amount of energy has been released (long wavelength), so the electrons are jumping a small way.
How much energy is emitted if there is a purple light? If purple light is emitted, a large amount of energy is released (short wavelength), so the electrons are jumping a long way.
_____ and ____ attract each other? Positives and negatives attract each other.
What are lattices? They are atoms stacked in alternating arrangements.
How many periods are there in the periodic table? 7
How many elements are there in the periodic table? 109
What is a molecule of an element When the same type of atoms bond together to form chemical bonds.
What is a Molecule of a compound? When atoms of at least 2 different elements bond together to form chemical bonds.
