Pregunta Respuesta
Farmed species must: -grow well under captive conditions -accept prepared i.e. non-living food -ideally be able to complete its life cycle i.e. breed under captive conditions -not be particularly susceptible to disease -have a high conversion ratio i.e. convert food~flesh efficiently
Water quality: -o2 ~bubble o2 through and using stirring paddles -algae filter out excess food and Nitrogeneous waste -waste build up~feed in regular, small amounts -disease~remove dead + diseased fish and using antibiotics
Disease Control: -close contact means disease spreads more quickly -use antibiotics+fungicides -remove dead and diseased fish Intraspecific competition+predation: -keep fish of different ages and size apart -no overcrowding~large cages -feed regularly in small amounts
Why eat fish? -Protein -Vitamin D -Omega 3 Interspecific Predation cover cages with nets
Advantages of Fish Farming: -can selectively breed for larger fish -not depleting wild fish stocks -all same size/age -guaranteed harvest (not larger) Interspecific Competition Predation -keep different species in different cages -have netting to keep out other fish, reducing competition for food and risk of predation
Problems+Environmental Concerns -disease can spread to wild population -release of bacteria+Nitrogeneous waste and can cause o2 depletion + Eutrophication -releases chemicals e.g. pesticides, antibiotics, which can affect wild food chains -release of mineral ions, e.g. Nitrates can cause Eutrophication -attracts predators to area -habitat destruction
