Pregunta Respuesta
What does homogeneous mean? All the substances involved in the reaction are in the same phase (state).
What does it mean in terms of reactant and products when a system is in equilibrium? Rate of the fwd reaction = rate of reverse reaction and concentrations remain constant.
Dynamic meaning the reaction is still continuing.
What is the formula for Kc (equilibrium constant)? Kc = [C]^c [D]^d/[A]^a [B]^b
Closed system A system where neither matter nor energy can be lost or gained.
Le Chatelier's principle If a dynamic equilibrium is disturbed by changing the conditions, the position of equilibrium moves to counteract the change.
Effect of changing pressure (on gaseous reactions) Increasing pressure will move the position of equilibrium towards the side with less volume (fewer moles). If moles are the same on both sides then increasing or decreasing pressure has no effect on position of equilibrium.
Effect of changing temperature Varies depending upon whether reaction is exothermic or endothermic. If exothermic, a lower temperature causes more products to be formed. If endothermic, then increasing temperature will shift position of equilibrium in favour of producing more products.
Effect of catalyst on position of equilibrium Has no effect on position of equilibrium however it affects the rate at which the position of equilibrium is achieved. A catalyst will lower the activation energy of a reaction and increase the rates of both the fwd and reverse reactions equally.
Optimum conditions for the Haber process High pressure (200atm), low temperature (450oC) and Fe catalyst used.
Optimum conditions for contact process High pressure (2 atm), low temperature (450oC), Vanadium (V) oxide catalyst used.
