What is an Enzyme? Enzymes are biological catalysts. There are optimum temperatures and pH values at which their activity is greatest. Enzymes are also proteins, and usually denatured above about 45ºC.
What does an enzyme do? Enzymes in cells catalyse photosynthesis, protein synthesis - joining amino acids together, and aerobic respiration.
How does an enzyme work? Substrate molecules fit into the enzyme's active site. They all have particular shapes.
What does MRS GREN mean? Movement Respiration Sensitivity Growth Reproduction Excretion Nutrition
What does a biological chemical factory in a plant do? It makes different chemical reactions occur that serve different purposes. Some reactions help the plant to repair itself, some to copy itself and some to help it grow. Other reactions allow the plant to break down large food molecules to release energy in respiration.
What is the scientific word for when an enzyme stops working? Denatured
What is active transport? Active transport is the process by which dissolved molecules move across a cell membrane from a lower to a higher concentration. In active transport, particles move against the concentration gradient - and therefore require an input of energy from the cell.
What is Photosynthesis Photosynthesis is a process used by plants in which energy from sunlight is used to convert carbon dioxide and water into molecules needed for growth. These molecules include sugars, enzymes and chlorophyll.
What is the chemical equation for Photosynthesis 6CO2 + 6H2O Reaction (light energy) ------> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What are chloroplasts? They contain chlorophyll and enzymes needed for reactions in photosynthesis.
What is the nucleus? They contain DNA carrying the genetic code for enzymes and other proteins used in photosynthesis
What is the Cell Membrane? This allows gas and water to pass in and out of the cell while controlling the passage of other molecules
What is the Vacuole? This contains cell sap to keep the cell turgid
What is the Cell Wall? This strengthens the cell
What is Cytoplasm? Enzymes and other proteins are used in photosynthesis made here
What is Diffusion? Dissolved substances have to pass through the cell membrane to get into or out of a cell. Diffusion is one of the processes that allows this to happen.
Diffusion occurs when...? Particles spread
