Fichas del conjunto (11)
- 1What bonding and structure does NaCl have?Ionic bonding and a giant ionic lattice structure.
- 2Define ionic bondThe electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
- 3What is a giant ionic lattice?A three-dimensional structure of oppositely charged ions, held together by strong ionic bonds
- 4What are the physical properties of a giant ionic lattice?High melting point
Dissolve well in polar solvents
Doesn't conduct electricity in solid state
Conducts electricity in molten state in solution - 5Why doesn't a NaCl conduct electricity in solid when it does in molten and solution? No free moving ions or electrons in solid.
In molten and solution, ions are free to move. - 6What shape is the P orbital?Dumb-bell shaped
- 7How many electrons are in a P sub-shell?6
- 8How many orbitals are in a P subshell?3
- 9What groups are in the P-block in the periodic table?Groups 3-8
- 10Why does water have a higher boiling point than other group 6 hydrides?Water molecules form hydrogen bonds to one another, which take a lot of energy to break before it can evaporate, giving it a relatively high boiling point.
- 11Why does ice float? In the liquid state, hydrogen bonds are constantly forming and breaking as the molecules move around. In the solid state, the O-H bonds and hydrogen bonds are arranged tetrahedrally around he O atom, forming an open lattice structure. This lowers the density, making ice float.
