- 1We chose to do a Chi-Squared analysis for our data. Our null hypothesis is that the caterpillars had no significant color preference when eating kale. Our alternate hypothesis is that the caterpillars did have a significant color preference when eating kale. As you can see in the table below, we divided our categories based on color choice. The observed column contains our actual data from our fifteen two-choice chamber trials. Our expected values would mean that all three choice categories have equal values, so they are all five.This slide shows our Chi-squared calculation. Our Chi-squared value is 3.1. With a p-value of 0.05 and 2 degrees of freedom, the critical value is 5.991. Since our Chi-squared value is less than the critical value, we fail to reject the null hypothesis. According to these calculations
, the caterpillars have no significant color preference. This result is different from what we expected, as we hypothesized that the caterpillars would prefer one color over the other.
