What is there left to do?You need to realize that knowing all of the facts is not enough; there are some crucial commitments that you have to make in order to become the best possible defender of the Christian faith that you can be. Over the next six lessons, you will learn about these commitments (six total).
- 2Commitment 1: Commitment to Study the Bible.Your time in God's Word is the most important part of every day. If you do not know God's Word, then you cannot defend it.
- 3Three Ways to Ensure You Spend Time in God's WordSet aside a specific time of the day (Psalm 5:3).
Have a specific plan for reading the Bible
Have a specific place for your Bible study (Mark 1:35). - 4Set aside a specific time of the day (Psalm 5:3).The time of day doesn't matter as much as consistency does. Just pick a time and stick with it (morning, lunch, evening, night, etc.).
- 5Have a specific plan for reading the BibleDownload an app and use one of the Bible reading plans found within it (YouVersion, Bible.is, etc.).
Find a Bible reading plan on a website, print it off, and place it in your Bible. - 6Have a specific place for your Bible study (Mark 1:35).A quiet place where you will not be easily distracted works best.
- 7Three Aspects of Studying God's WordBible Reading
Scripture Memorization
Prayer - 8Bible ReadingObservation - What does it say? (Note: You are summarizing the text with this step.
Interpretation - What does it mean? (Note: You should not seek to determine what it means to you, but rather what it means within the context of the Bible. In other words, what did it mean to those who were participating in the actual events that you are reading about?)
Application - How can I apply it to my life? (Note: Although there is always one correct interpretation of a particular text, there are many correct applications.) - 9Scripture MemorizationWrite down Bible verses on 3x5" index cards so that you can carry them with you at all times.
Post Bible verses where you will see them multiple times per day (on the bathroom mirror, on the refrigerator, etc.).
Listen to the verses multiple times over each day (record yourself saying the verse and listen to it, use a Bible app that reads verses to you, etc.). - 10PrayerYou should begin your Bible study with prayer, pray through verses as you read, and end with prayer.
For example: If you were reading Proverbs 3:5-6, you might pray for God to help you to lean solely on God's understanding and to follow him in everything you do. - 11Common Excuses For Not Having a Quiet Time"I don't have enough time."
"I don't know where to start."
"The Bible is boring." - 12"I don't have enough time."Wake up 15-30 minutes earlier every morning.
Read your Bible while eating lunch every day.
Stay up 15-30 minutes later every night. - 13"I don't know where to start."Find a plan and stick to it (plans were discussed above).
- 14"The Bible is boring."Start with the Gospels, Psalms, and Proverbs.
After reading the Gospels, read the rest of the New Testament.
When you read the Old Testament, it is a good idea to read Psalms, Proverbs, and/or the New Testament on the same day. - 15Why Should You Have a Quiet Time? To grow closer to God (James 4:8)If you don't spend time with your best friend, then you will not grow closer to him/her. The same applies to your relationship with God; if you don't spend time with him, then you will not grow closer to him.
- 16To make you more like Christ and so that others can see him in you (3 John 1:11; Exodus 34:29-35).You cannot expect to become a godly man or woman if you are not spending time studying God's Word.
One of the most powerful tools of an apologist is his/her own life! If people genuinely see Christ in you, they will respect you and may want to hear why you're so different. - 17So that you can more effectively defend what you believe (1 Peter 3:15).If you don't know what the Bible says, then how can you defend it?
- 18Jesus did (Luke 5:16).If Jesus thought it was important to study the Bible on a daily basis, then so should we!
- 19"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you"(James 4:8).
