- 1Compare spark ignition and compression ignition enginesSI: ignition by spark, low compression ratio, relatively lightweight, higher rpm, uses more fuel. needs fuel to not be volatile
CI: spontaneous ignition, high compression ratio, heavy, lower rpm, uses less fuel needs fuel to be volatile. - 2describe 2 stroke engine steps1 - fuel air oil mix taken into crankshaft area, meanwhile previous intake is compressed in chamber then ignited
2 - fuel combusts, expands in chamber producing work, exhaust is opened and combusted products start leaving, soon after intake is opened and fuel oil air mix goes into chamber - 3give adv. and disadv. for rotary enginesadv: higher rpms due to simpler design, higher power to weight ratio as there are 3 'intakes' for every rotation.
disadv: lower compression ratio, very high tolerances needed or else chambers will mix into one another. Limited commercial success. - 4define supercharger, turbocharger and their differencessupercharger: air compressor which pushes compressed air into chamber, increasing amount of oxygen an making the fuel burn better. power for the supercharger comes from crankshaft or other mechanical part so it is parasitic.
Turbocharger: special type of supercharger which is powered by a turbine in the exhaust pipe, meaning it is not directly parasitic. turbine causes back-pressure however which can prevent exhaust gas leaving chamber. turbine must spin very fast to power compressor and this makes it unreliable, and it takes time for the turbine to reach its full speed. - 5talk about the carburetorThe carburetor is a mechanical device which mixes the fuel and air in correct ratios for SI engines, mostly replaced by electronics nowadays
