- 1What are the four spinal curves of the spine?Cervical curve
Thoracic curve
Lumbar curve
Sacral curve - 2What shape does an infants body axis have?C shape
- 3What curves does the "c shape" result from?Thoracic curve
Sacral curve
(These are called primary/accommodation curves) - 4In infants what are the lumbar and cervical curves known as?Secondary curves
(Compensation curves)
As they do not appear until several months after birth - 5By what age are all four curves fully developed?10
- 6What are the 3 basic parts of the vertebra?Vertebral body
Vertebral arch
Articular processes - 7What is the vertebral body? Also known as the centrum
It is the part of the vertebra that transfers weight along the axis of the vertebral column - 8What are the invertebral discs?Pads of fibrocartilage that separate the bodies of adjacent vertebrae
- 9What is the vertebral arch?It forms the posterior margin of each vertebral foreman
- 10Identify the main regions of the vertebral column and state how many vertebrae are in each column7 Cervical vertebrae
12 Thoracic vertebrae
5 Lumbar vertebrae
5 (fused) Sacral vertebrae
4-6 (semi-fused) vertebrae - 11What are the features of the typical vertebrae?Vertebral body
Pedicles
Lamina
Transverse processes
Spinous processes
Superior articular process
Inferior articular process
Under each pedicle is the vertebral notch - 12How can you distinguish between the Atlas (C1) and the Axis (C2)The atlas doesn't have a body or a spinous process
