How does tardak work and what are its side effects? It suppresses LH and FSH by acting as a progestogen, it has a calming effect (not suitable to use if assessing if castration will make a difference on the animals behaviour) it can cause PU/PD
How does ypozane work and what are its side effects? It competitively binds to androgen receptors and prevents testosterone moving into the prostate. It suppresses cortisol so will cause false negatives on the ACTH stim test, it may increase the appetite and induce vomiting.
How does suprelorin work and what are its side effects? It agonises the GnRH receptors and can last unto 18 months, it will shrink the size of the dogs testicles and a swelling may be seen around the implant site.
what are the benefits of castration? Less risk of neoplasia (in particular anal adenoma andsertoli cell tumours), reduced risk of benign prostatic hypoplasia, no chance of testicular infection, no chance of testicular trauma and reduced risk of perineal hernia.
What are the three drugs which are available for chemical castration? -Tardak (delmadinone) -Ypozane (osaterone) -Suprelorin (deslorelin)
what are the surgical techniques for castration? -Open -Closed -scrotal ablation
What is the procedure for an open castration? push the testicle into the neck of the testicle, incise over it through the skin, then the vaginal tunic and dartos. DO NOT cut through the tunica albuginae. Extract the testicle and peal back the vaginal tunic, tear the scrotal ligament, double clamp the cord (not clamping the piriform plexus) Ligate and chop off checking for bleeding and repeat with the second testicle. Close the skin with 2-3 interrupted or intra-derma sutures.
What is the difference between the open and closed techniques? The vaginalis isn't cut on a closed castration, it must be double ligated also
When is scrotal ablation acceptable? in cases of scrotal neoplasia
How should rabbits be castrated? Using the closed technique/ sophie technique (open the vaginalis then close it when completing the operation.
What is the worry when castrating small furries? They can loose heat too quickly
When castrating a chinchilla an extra suture is needed where and why? in the inguinal ring, this prevents herniation
How should a cryptorchid testicle be found? Follow the vessel or vas defferense.
