  1. 1Pulse OximetryThis process measures the amount carried by the haemoglobin in a patient's blood
  2. 2HaemoglobinMolecules in the red blood cells that help carry oxygen around the body from the lungs to the cells. This is the pigment that makes the blood red.
  3. 3OxyhaemoglobinHaemoglobin that is rich in absorbed oxygen and is a bright red colour
  4. 4Reduced HaemoglobinHaemoglobin that has given up its oxygen to cells and appears a purply colour.
  5. 5Pulse OximeterA device that is clipped onto a thin part of the body like the finger or earlobe. There is a transmitter on one side for a light ray and an infrared ray and a photon detector on the opposite side.
  6. 6How does it work?1. The light and infrared beam are transmitted through the finger and are detected by the photon detector on the opposite side of the pulse oximeter.
    2. The red light is the comparison point for the infrared beam.
    3. The amount of light absorption depends on the colour of the blood. the brighter the colour, the more oxygen is in the blood.
    4. The colour/amount of infrared that comes out the other side is detected by the photon detector which then calculated the oxygen percentage.
  7. 7Reflection Pulse Oximetryhis uses a similar process to pulse oximetry - it reflects light off red blood cells instead of shining a light through a part of the body
