- 1What kinds of software system would be best suited to the incremental model?Systems where the problem falls naturally into partitions each of which represents a fairly self contained unit of functionality.
- 2Life cycle models sometimes show only the software-creation activities and exclude software maintenance. What problems are associated with the use of such models? If maintenence is not mentioned it is likely it will not be an integral part of the overall software life cycle. This may result in a design that does not take the needs of maintenance into account and hence a product that is difficult and expensive to change.
- 3How do you think a large scale project differs from a small scale project in terms of the management of the development team?As the size of the project increases, so does the number of people involved and consequently the complexity of the interactions involved.
- 4What are some of the problems associated with software development?difficulty capturing requirements ; difficulties managing large complex systems ; continual changes in user requirements ; difficulties in maintaining software ; bugs ; maintaining momentum during development ; ensuring quality.
- 5What is malleability?Software is easy to change, but this can mean it is easy to break.
- 6In what ways is software development similar to engineering?when it involves a defined process with clear activities each of which has one or more products that can be tested against the users' requirements.
- 7What kinds of life cycle are there?sequential, iterative, incremental
- 8What is a model? An abstract representation of a specification, design or system, i.e. a simplification of reality
- 9How does a standard modelling language contribute to software development? Can make software easier to understand and so maintain. This can make it cheaper.
- 10What are the two distinct kinds of model?static and dynamic
- 11The use case viewcontains the basic scenarios that describe the users and the tasks that they need to perform with the aid of a software system.
- 12logical viewconcerned with the functional requirements of the software system - what should the software do for its intended users.
- 13implementation viewconcerned with the organisation of the modules that comprise the software system
- 14the deployment viewconcerned with the relationship between the various executables
- 15the process viewconcerned with aspects of concurrency - processes and threads
- 16what is an elementin UML an element is an atomic constituent of a model
- 17should we try to capture everything about a design in a single diagram? No, because we will be interested in different aspects of a design at different times
- 18What is the difference between a static and dynamic model?a static model describes the elements of a system and their relationships. A dynamic model describes the behaviour of a system over time.
- 19domain modellingmodelling what already exists
- 20requirements engineeringspecifying what the system must do
- 21further analysisadding detail to the system specification
- 22designshowing how the system will meet its specification
- 23implementationproducing code that will meet the user requirement
- 24testingensuring software does meet its requirements
- 25deploymentconfiguring the code to give a runnable system
- 26initial problem statementstarting point to document and model the structure and processes of the organisations business
- 27what is the purpose of requirements engineering?to establish what a software system must do
- 28CASE toolscomputer aided software engineering
