- 1RAMPrograms often need more than available. Rather than not opening the program, the program, will use "virtual memory".
Virtual memory will use the hard drive as extra RAM. The vastly extends the amount of memory available on a computer. The hard drive section is called "swap space". - 2Virtual MemoryData , programs or parts of programs are copied from the memory onto the hard drive. this occurs normally when they are not in use. It is much slower than normal RAM. If too much is used, it can slow down computer. All computers use some VM. Over use can cause "thrashing". This is where data is continually swapped in and out causing major slow down of the computer.
