  1. 1What is the speed of light?300 Million m/s.
  2. 2How does light travel? In the form of radiation as light does not need a present material so it may be transmitted unlike sound.
  3. 3What is the energy from the sun called?Electromagnetic radiation.
  4. 4What are other forms of radiation that is released from the sun?Visible light, gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet radiation, infrared radiation, microwaves and radio waves.
  5. 5What is the name given to all the different types of radiation released from the sun?The electromagnetic spectrum.
  6. 6What makes the forms of radiation from the sun different? The length and frequency of each type of wave.
  7. 7Give an example of this. One radio wave is much longer than a gamma wave, but the frequency accounts for very little unlike a gamma waves.
  8. 8Explain about visible light and the sun's electromagnetic spectrum.Visible light is on the larger side of the sun's electromagnetic spectrum but it is made up of a spectrum itself which are the colours of the rainbow.
  9. 9How does a rainbow become visible to us?Rain drops split the white light released from the sun into the visible spectrum of colours which we call a rainbow.
  10. 10What is this process called? This process of splitting white light through transparent and translucent objects is called dispersion.
  11. 11What are the colours of the visible spectrum in order?Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
  12. 12How can this be remembered?Through the acronym ROY G BIV.
  13. 13How does the visible spectrum relate to the sun's electromagnetic spectrum? The wavelength and frequency change with each colour, for example red has the longest wave lengths but lowest frequency.
  14. 14What are three ways that light can interact with substances?Transmitted through the substance, reflected from the surface or absorbed into the substance.
  15. 15What is a transparent substance?A substance in which almost all light can be transmitted through.
  16. 16What are two examples of this?Clear glass and shallow water.
  17. 17What is a translucent substance?A substance that transmits only some light which is scattered after that.
  18. 18What are two examples of this?Tissue paper and fingernails.
  19. 19What is an opaque substance?A substance in which no light can be transmitted through.
  20. 20What are two examples of this?Brick and wood.
  21. 21What is a reflection? When light bounces off surfaces such as glass or mirrors.
