  1. 1Synovial joints: They are formed when 2 or more bones or cartilages come into contact. Articular surfaces are covered by articular cartilages to provide low friction. The articular surfaces are lubricated by synovial fluid. The joint is then enclosed by a capsule of fibrous tissue attached to each bone forming the joint. The capsule may be strengthened by ligaments - although ligaments do not fuse with the capsule.
(Ligaments limit the range of movement of a joint to help prevent unwanted movement in certain areas.
  2. 2Temporomandibular Joint: The joint between the condyle of the mandible and the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone. The TMJ is responsible for jaw movement (and is the most used joint in the body). The unique feature of the TMJ is the articular disc. The articular disc is a flexible and elastic cartilage that serves as a cushion between the the 2 bone surfaces. The mandible is the only bone that moves when the mouth opens.
The first 20 mm of the mouth opening involves only a rotational movement of the condyle in the socket.
For the mouth to open wider, the condyle and the articular disc have to move out of the socket, forward and down the articular eminence - This movement is called translation.
