- 1SievingTechnique: you separate fine particles from essentially bigger particles by using a sieve. It is one of the most used solid-solid separation methods.
You can separate gravel from sand - 2EvaporationTechnique: It is used to separate homogeneous mixtures driving off the liquids from the solid components. This process usually involves heating the solution until there are no more liquids remaining.
With this method, you can separate salt from water since the water will evaporate leaving only the salt.
- 3DistillationTechnique: it is a purification process where a mixture of two or more liquids is heated, evaporated, condensed, and isolated. This method is used to separate the solvent from a solution and it takes advantage of the difference in boiling points. This is one of the techniques used to separate ethanol from water.
- 4DecantationTechnique: it is used to separate particles from a liquid by allowing the solids to settle at the bottom of the mixture and then pour the liquid carefully into another container.
With this technique, one can separate water from sand.
- 5CrystallizationTechnique: It is a method used for the purification of solid substances (it separates solids from a solution). As one substance evaporates, the dissolved substance comes out of solution and collects as crystals. With this technique, one can obtain pure copper sulfate from an impure sample.
- 6FiltrationTechnique: it is used to remove solids from liquids by using a filter that allows the fluid to pass through. This process can involve the use of a filter paper placed in the filter funnel. It can be used to separate water from sand.
- 7MagnetismTechnique: This is used to separate a mixture of components. A magnetic susceptible material is extracted from the mixture using a magnetic force as it falls on a rubber belt which moves horizontally over 2 rollers, one of which has electromagnetic attached. This is the method used to separate iron filings from sulfur.
- 8Paper ChromatographyTechnique: It separates components of a mixture (usually liquid). The particles of the mixture are separated as they are carried up the chromatography paper by the solvent. The separation happens because the components travel at different rates. The substances that are separated are usually colorings, inks or plant pigments.
- 9CentrifugingTechnique: It is used for the separation of particles from a solution. In this method, the particles are suspended in a liquid and placed in a centrifuge tube, which is then placed in a rotor and spun at a defined speed. It is used to separate skim milk from whole milk.
