1TrunkThe Torso of the body, including the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. The head and neck, arms, and legs are all attached to the trunk.
2SupineThe patient is lying down on his or her back.
3ProneThe patient is lying down on his or her stomach.
4ErectThe patient is standing upright
5AnteriorIn front. The front of the body is the anterior surface.
6PosteriorIn back, or behind. The back of the body is the posterior surface.
7MidlineThe imaginary line from the top of the head through the nose and the navel, dividing the body into left and right halves.
8LateralThe side of the body, away from the midline.
9SuperiorAbove, or closer to the top of the head.
10InferiorBelow, or closer to the bottom of the feet.
11ProximalToward the trunk. Used only with respect to a limb.
12DistalAway from the trunk. Used only with respect to a limb.
