Week 18 - PHY: Doppler effect
Fichas del conjunto (10)
- 1Define the doppler effectA change in the frequency and wavelength of a wave caused by shifts in positions between the source of the wave and the observer
- 2Define frequencyRefers to the number of cycles (peaks) that occur per unit of time (seconds)
- 3What happens to the pitch when there is a low frequency? The pitch is low as well
- 4What happens to the pitch as the frequency increases? The pitch becomes higher
- 5Define relative motionThe movement of 1 object/pbserver in relation to another
- 6Explain the doppler effect on stationary objectsIn stationary objects, sound waves don't expirience the boppler effect; there is no relative motion between the source and observer, resulting in no frequency shift or change of pitch
- 7Explain the doppler effect on moving objects (towards observer)As the sound source moves to the observer the waves begin to compress, due to the object picking up speed. Therefore, a higher pitch can be heard since the waves in the front bunch up creating a higher frequency
- 8Explain the doppler effect on moving objects (away from observer)When a sound source moves away from an observer the doppler effects causes the sound waves to stretch out. Resulting in a lower frequency and pitch
- 9What is the realtioship between the frequency and wavelengthThey have a inverse relationship. As one increases, the other decreases and vice versa. This is because the wave speed is constant
(V = f * λ) - 10Give 4applications of the doppler effectIt is used in:
- Astronomy
- Radar
- Medical ultrasound
