Composites

Fichas del conjunto (8)
- 1What is Composites -Two or more materials mixed together by some kind of bonding. -The composite has improved mechanical, functional & aesthetically.-Excellent strength-to-weight ratio
-Useful for many products - 2Glass reinforced plastic (GRP) Made from thermosetting plastic resin that has been rein forced using very fine glass

- 3Carbon Fibre The carbon fibres are able to take tensile loads, are set onto a polymer matrix that is able to take big loads. much stronger than GRP.

- 4Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) Most common and widespread composite material. It is mainly made from waste wood. It can be laminated to improve its strength/aesthetics.

- 5Chipboard Like MDF, waste wood is glues together under heat and pressure leaving a smooth surface. It comes in normal and high densityNormal:-most common
-fairly soft
High:-hard
-solid
Uses- table tops & internal fire doors - 6Laminates produced by bonding two or more layers of material. It is a very stable material. They do not warp or misshape and they are easy worked.

- 7Plywood Made from layers of veneers that are bonded together using glue (veneers are thin layers of wood). Plywood is strong as the grain goes different directions.

- 8Blockboard Made up of strips of softwood; they are positioned edge-to-edge. The side of the sheet that is produced is covered with veneer then glued togetherFor table of Composites go to book pages 31-32
