- 1What is a y intercept? To clarify the algebraic part, think again about the axes. When you were first introduced to the Cartesian plane, you were shown the regular number line from elementary school (the x-axis), and then shown how you could draw a perpendicular number line (the y-axis) through the zero point on the first number line. Take a closer look, and you'll see that the y-axis is also the line "x = 0". In the same way, the x-axis is also the line "y = 0".
Then, algebraically,
an x-intercept is a point on the graph where y is zero, and
a y-intercept is a point on the graph where x is zero.
More specifically,
an x-intercept is a point in the equation where the y-value is zero, and
a y-intercept is a point in the equation where the x-value is zero. - 2(For rate of change/contextual slope) What is y intercept in this case? From this example:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aISNZMNIvA
Y is the fixed cost. - 3(For rate of change/contextual slope) What is the slope in this case? From this example:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aISNZMNIvA
Slope is the variable cost. - 4(For rate of change/contextual slope) So with what you know from cards of the same topic, you slip the info to solve into the:Slope-intercept form
y=mx+b - 5(For rate of change/contextual slope) In Slope-intercept form, b is:y
- 6(For rate of change/contextual slope) In the case of the topic above, what would y/b be?The fixed value in the word problem.
- 7What is the independent variable?x
- 8What is y in relation to x?The dependent variable.
- 9(Fill in the Blanks) The value of ___ depends on the value of ___. (in a function)y, x.
- 10(word problems) What is the rate of change? Is the change in your y values, which is your dependent values, over the change in the x values which are your independent values.
- 11For a word problem using the slope formula, what do you try to find in the problem first? What is going to be independent and what is going to be dependent.
- 12For a word problem using the slope formula, how do you find out which is the independent variable?Ask yourself if information in said question really relies/depends on anything. If not really, it's the independent variable. (x)
- 13(Slope formula word problem) So if there is an obvious decrease in the dependent variable by the end of the word problem before you solve, then you:put the y^2 as a negative
- 14When you solve the slope formula your final phrasing should be:(insert number here) units lost/ gained or increase/decrease
- 15Using the final packet example, how would you explain this in words?: -8/1The rate of change of range 8 units to a change of 1 unit positive.
- 16To find the numbers using slope formula with the calculator:You put the formula in y=, then you press table start and use the first two pairs for the slope formula.
- 17(Easy way to graph parabolas [with parenthesis]) Step one?Find vertex
- 18If not already in vertex form in the function, how do you find the vertex?-b/2a
- 19For the formula of finding the vertex, if your negative b is already negative in the function, do you just replace it?No, now it's negative times the negative number. The top becomes positive.
- 20-b/2a is to find the what of the vertex?X
- 21How would you find y for the vertex?Plug in the x you just found in the equation and solve. The result is your y.
- 22For an easy way to find a parabola(without the square root) what is the step pattern?(1,3,5,7)*a
A being the number in front of the x^2
