  1. FIRST AND SECOND CONDITIONAL

  2. The First Conditional is used to talk about a hypothetical situation that has a high possibility of becoming a reality. For example:

If Chelsea win, I will be happy - If I win Chelsea I will be very happy

If it rains, I will be sad - If it rains I will be sad

It is assumed that the two actions "win" and "rain" have a high possibility of being fulfilled, for this we use the First Conditional.

  3. The phrase has two parts, One with the "if" plus the present simple and the other with the future. We look at the two parts:

Part 1: "If Chelsea win": It is the action / event that could occur.

Part 2: "I will be happy": what will happen if the hypothesis in part 1 is fulfilled

    And in the second example:

Part 1: "If it rains": It is the action / event that could happen.

Part 2: "I will be sad": what will happen if the hypothesis in part 1 is fulfilled

  4. The Second Conditional is used to talk about a hypothesis that has a low possibility of being fulfilled or that will never be fulfilled. For example:

If you ate your socks, you would be ill - If you ate your socks you would get sick.

If Madrid was near the sea, the people would be happier - If Madrid were close to the sea people would be happier.

Do you see how the two hypothetical events are impossible (in the case of Madrid) or very unlikely (in the case of eating your socks - although you never know!)

  5. The Second Conditional, like the First Conditional, has two parts, one with the "if" plus the simple past and the other with the would + infinitio. We look at the two parts:

Part 1: If you tie your socks: It is the hypothetical action / event.

Part 2: you would be ill: what would happen if the hypothesis in part 1 were fulfilled

    And in the second example:

Part 1: If Madrid was near the sea: It is the hypothetical action / event.

Part 2: the people would be happier: what would happen if the hypothesis in part 1 were fulfilled

  6. pronuntiation:

If you ate your socks, you would be ill

If Madrid was near the sea, the people would be happier
