SUCESS AND FAILURE OF DIETING
Failure
Sucess
Restraint theory
People try and consciously eat less and restrain intake. tHIS ^ probability of over eating
Wardle and beales- test this prediction of dietry restraint caused overeating
-27 obese women -a diet group, excersise group and non treatment
- 7 weeks
- food intake and apatite where assessed before and after they had a snack.e,g a chocolate bar.
- week 6 food intake assessed under stressful conditions.
Results- in both assessment sessions women in diet condition ate more than in women in excersise and non treatment.
This shows that restraint eating ^food intake- highlights how that dieting method fails.
Herman's boundary model.- explain why dieting lead to overeating.
Suggested- hunger keeps food intake above a certain minimum and satiety keeps intake below a maximum. Psychological factors have large impact on consumption between the two levels.Dieting believed to have a larger range between hunger and satiety.longer to feel hungry more food to satifey. restrain eating. once go past this continue till satiety but there satiety is further away then a proposed non dieters satiety.
The boundary model helps to explain why we overeat. helping support the theory and research.
Role of denial
Attempting supress a thought makes it more prominant
Wagner
Participants not to think about a white bear. ring bell if did
-those told not to think about bear rang bell less than those told to think about bear.
Called it the theory of ironic processes of mental control- as denial of thought leads it to occurring more often.
Applying this to dieting and restraint eating. Dieters attempting to not eat food, causes it to become more prominent in there minds and so more tempting- leadint to failure of dieting.

Redden
The sucsess to dieting is by the attention we pay to whats being eaten.Like experiences less as we repeat them so dieting regime harder. To prevent this focus on details of the meal.e.g salad- think of conponants like rocket, cashew nuts.this overcomes bordem resulting in dieting sucsess.
To test- Jelly beans
-participants 22 jelly beans. one at a time. information about each jelly bean.
1 group-general info e.g jb 7
2 group- specific flavour
Group 1- bored faster
group 2- enjoyed task more.
This suggests- that a cognitive role contributes to whetehr a diet fails or succeeds. By focusing on conponants on food and as the jelly bean shows that having more detail makes it more enjoyable. therefore making dieting more enjoyable- success.
