Lack of skills- Lack interpersonal skills to make them mutually satisfying. e.g poor conversationalists, showing interest in the other person, unrewarding in interactions. Not interested in a relationship- breakdown before it even really starts.

Lack of stimulation- Social exchange theory- people look for rewards, such as stimulations Therefore lack of stimulation lead to breakdown as feels like not getting rewarded.

maintenance difficulties- relationship strained as partner can not see each other.responsible for breackdown.

Baxter- Lack of stimulation ie boredom or relationship isn't going anywhere often quoted during break ups. Expect change and to develop.- justification to end a relationship.

Shaver- People in strong romantic relationships survive pressure of decreased contact. not same for everyone. Becomes overwhelming- breakdown.

Intrapsychic phase- social withdrawal, feeling under benefited, considering alternative, resentment

Dydadic- Feelings of uncertainty and anxiety, Discussion of discontents and relationship.

SOCIAL- Going public, Support from friends and family

Grave dressing- Justify actions. show themselves as trustworthy and loyal. Reinterpret view of partner,e.g attracted to rebellious nature now see as irresponsible.

Resurrection process- prepares for new relationshipby recreating sense of own social value. learning from past mistakes and experience.
