INPUT
It's the language that a learner hears or reads that has some kind of communicative intend
- There is a message in the language that the learner is supposed to attend to; his/her mission is to understand the message, to comprehend the meaning of the utterance of the sentence
L2 learners get input as well. As in the case of L1 acquistion examples as: "Sign it here, on this line is considered input, because somebody is speaking on the second language and attempting to communicate something and at the same time, the learner is understanding the message
The message the learner attempts to comprehend is encoded linguistically with lexical items (words), syntax (sentence structure), morphology (inflections on words), and so on
There are two types of input
- Conversational: is the language that learners hear in the context of some kind of communicative exchange with other people
- Non-conversational: Is language that a learner hears when he or she is not part of the interaction; it is not directed to the individual learner
Learners always process input for meaning first and rely on content words before anything else to get that meaning.
- Nature of input processing, that is how learners make form-meaning connections and how they parse sentences
- Comprenhension is facilitated by interaction, it means by conversation. One way meaning is negociated is through confirmation checks
