1. Admired, heroic, honourable

   • "unseamed him from the nave to th' chops" - Captain, ACT1.2
   • "Brave Macbeth" - Captain, ACT1.2
   • "Which smoked with bloody execution" - Captain, ACT1.2

2. Fear

   • "fruitless throne" -Macbeth ACT3.1
     • "line of kigs" - Macbeth (about Banquo) ACT3.1
     • Macbeth fears Banquo as his children will become kings, instead of Macbeth's- according to the witches' prophesy.
       • Macbeth's mistrust of Banquo leads him to dwell on the witches' prophesy
   • "To be thus is nothing; but to be safely thus" - Macbeth ACT3.1
     • to be a king is nothing unless you are safe as a king.
   • "What need I fear thee? But yet I'll make assurance double sure... Thou shall not live." - Macbeth ACT4.1
     • Afraid his power will be taken away, trying to eliminate all potential threats

3. Guilt

   • "hangmans hands"- Macbeth ACT2.2
     • hands covered in blood from disembowelling victims of execution
       • BLOOD MOTIF
   • "I am in blood. Stepp'd in so far, that, should I wade no more, Returning were as tedious as go o'er." - Macbeth ACT3.4
     • Said in front of many guests - Macbeth unable to old back his guilt and fea

4. Ambition

   • "I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, only valuting ambition, which o'erleaps and falls on the other." - Macbeth ACT1.7
     • Macbeth admits he cannot justify committing this crime, yet it is his own ambition driving him to do it.
