3.9 Testing Techniques
Test Hardness
- allows some types of testing to be automated
- consists of software and test data which run code under different conditions
- removes the need for a programmer to do the same repetetive tests
Volume testing
- to show how the system changes with different volumes of data
- so it is ensured it can meet the specifiation and requirements of the client
- establishes the limits of the volume of data a software can handle
scalability testing
- a series of tests are conducted as the system is scaled up
- results are analysed when the system starts to struggle
- making sure the system can handle increased workloads
prototyping - not strictly a testing type but useful
- so that required changes can be made
- producing working but limited versions of the system at various points in the SDLC
- allows feedback to be collected at various points
Portability or multi platform testing
- used when systems need to operate on multiple platforms such as different operating systems
- aims to demonstrate that the software can be transferred
use of simulated enviroments
- the tests are done in real situations so that it is as close to the real final system as possible
- the test conditions are fairer because its how the system will actually be used
