Atmosphere
Layers of the atmosphere
- Troposphere: It is the 1st layer of the atmosphere extending from the Earth's surface to a height of about 6–10 km. It is the part where the humans live in.
- Stratosphere: The 2nd layer of the Earth's atmosphere extending to about 50 km above the earth's surface.
- Mesosphere: The 3rd layer of the Earth's atmosphere above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere, between about 50 and 80 km in altitude.
- Thermosphere: The 4rd layer of the Earth's atmosphere. Characterized by an increase in temperature with height. The layer were all the radiation and rays of the sun are absorbed.
- Exosphere: The last layer of the Earth's atmosphere. It has very thin air in it.
According to the dictionary, atmosphere is the “envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet.”
Relationship with weather: In the Earth's atmosphere gasses such as water vapor are absorbed. This water vapor causes the creation of clouds that produce precipitation that make up the weather.
Greenhouse effect : Process in which the Earth gets warmth by the trapping of the sun's warmth in the Earth's atmosphere. The sun produces rays that reach the Earth, some bounce in the atmosphere and some are absorbed.
Acid Rain
- Rainfall that turns acidic due to the pollution in the atmosphere. it causes harm to the environment, typically to forests and lakes.
- The main cause of acid rain is the industrial burning of coal and other fossil fuels. Gases such as sulfur and nitrogen oxides, combine with atmospheric water to form acids.
The ozone layer
- It is responsible for absorbing harmful ultraviolet rays, and preventing them from entering the Earth's atmosphere.
- Due to harmful chemicals referred ozone-depleting substances (ODS) the ozone layer has been depleting.
