Using cloud and traditional systems together.

  1. Synchronising content over devices

    • Sometimes applications and files are located on an organisation's own system or user's PC, or they could be in the cloud
    • Most organisations and many individuals use a combination of both. When you are using a combination of both, synchronising is particularly important.
    • For example, a salesman has files stored on their work PC, which are then synchronising to their lapop and are available via smartphone.
    • Media (games, music and video) could be stored on your home machine or in the cloud. Synchronising the content of devices is often optional but is important if you want to access the same files on each device, and it is essential if you are working with documents to make sure you are always the most up-to-date version.
  2. Online/offline working

    • Laptops are often issued to staff who work from remote locations, such as their homes, at a customer's premises or when travelling. This allows them to access an organisation's systems while they are away from their normal business locations (off-site)
    • Communications that may need to be shared include: a new order processed by sales staff, information about work done by an engineer for a customer so that can invoice can be raised and a technical menual for a device or installation to help a computer engineer with a repair.
  3. Managing notifications

    • The windows 10 operating system has a Sync Centre with settings that allow users to sync files between devices. users can set preferences (such as how often syncs should take place), view the results of a sync activity and take action if there have been any problems.
    • Managing a sync process requires the user to respond to notifications that are generated by the software managing the sync process. An example of a notification would be one that warns the user that the copy of the files they are syncing may be older than the file that already exists on the system. In this situation, the synchronising process will wait for action from the user.
    • Notifications can usually be configured depending on user needs. Some users switch off, or reduce the frequency of, notifications where the only required access is to confirm with a 'yes' click.
