1. Addition

   • And = e
     • Ex: I play tennis and I swim.
   • Also = também
     • Ex: Jean speaks Portuguese. Mary also speaks Spanish.
   • Too = também
     • Ex: I love you too.
   • Moreover = ademais
     • He enjoys selling, moreover, is good at it.
   • Besides/ in addition to = além de
     • I don’t want to go to the show; I am tired and, besides, I don’t like rock.

2. Purpose

   • So that = para que
     • Ex: They saved money for a year so that they could visit Australia for the first time.
   • So as to/ in order to = afim de que
     • Ex: They saved money for a year so as to visit Australia for the first time.

3. Condition

   • In case = caso
     • Ex: Take my umbrella with you in case it rains.
   • Even if = mesmo que
     • Ex: Even if it rains, they will spend the weekend on the beach.
   • Unless = a não ser que
     • Ex: They will spend the weekend on the beach unless it rains.

4. Reason and cause

   • Because = porque
     • The window doesn't close properly because it's broken.
   • Since/ as = porque ou como
     • Since a heavy snowfall was coming, all flights were cancelled.

5. Conclusion

   • As a result/ therefore = portanto
     • Ex: They fell in love with the Caribean Islands, as a result decided to spend their honeymoon there.

6. Alternation

   • Neither.... no = não/nem.... nem
     • Ex: Life is neither about buying nor working.
   • Either.... or = ou.... ou
     • Ex: Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.

7. Contrast

   • But = mas
     • Ex: I'm sleepy, but I don't want to go to bed now.
   • Although/ even though = apesar
     • Ex: Although it was raining, Ronald went swimming.
   • In spite of = apesar de
     • Ex: Her laptop doesn't work although it's new.
