Strip Foundations & Attacks

1. Strip/Trench Fill foundation

   • suitable for taking & redistributing continuos loads
   • used for low rise buildings

2. Construction Sequence

   • Removal of topsoil
     • Set out foundation lines (profiles & string)
       • Narrow trenches are set out
         • Foundations are excavated and depth is measured by timber pegs
           • Concrete fill
             • Levelling & Compacting
               • Substructure walls
                 • Dense blocks
                 • Cavity forming & filling

3. Stepping Foundations

   • minimum overlap of 300 mm of foundation thickness is required
   • Step (S) should not be greater than foundation depth (T)

4. Attack on Foundations

   • Heave
     • Occurs when
       • tree roots are severed
       • water enters ground from leaking drains & services
       • changes in ground water conditions
   • Sulfate attacks
     • can cause
       • doming
       • blistering
       • scaling
       • loss of compressive strength
