Foundations and Substructure
73 resources created by 51 users
This Foundations and Substructure page on GoConqr gathers community-made quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes, from shallow foundations and bearing capacity to piling, basements and waterproofing. It's built for university students and professional candidates practising foundation selection and basement design, and for teachers after ready-made material. There are over 60 resources here, including more than 40 mind maps and over 40 contributors' work to browse. Open a quiz to find your gaps, then build your own maps and flashcards.

About Foundations and Substructure
GoConqr OriginalWhat this unit covers
This unit sits in the Geotechnical Engineering strand of Civil engineering and construction. It follows the path of a load from the structure down into the ground, then looks at the spaces built below it.
- Foundation choice: the mind map on selection of foundation lists the requirements of a good foundation, the types, and how to choose between them.
- Shallow foundations: the notes on foundation types in relation to bearing capacity cover strip foundations for load-bearing walls, while another note sets out the requirements of a satisfactory shallow foundation.
- Piles: mind maps on factors affecting the choice of pile consider ground conditions, access, environment and cost, including why driven piles cause problems in urban areas.
- Basements: the Top-Down Basement Construction note explains casting the ground floor slab early so the superstructure can rise while excavation continues below.
Where to start
Begin with the mind maps called Foundations and Shallow Foundations to get the overall picture. Then read the notes on bearing capacity, which explain why soil type and condition matter. Move on to piling once you are comfortable with strip, raft and trench systems.
Basements and waterproofing
The Basements flashcard deck asks whether planning permission is required, what guidance exists, and how existing basements are waterproofed. The SUBSTRUCTURE mind map sets out tanking, integral and drained approaches, along with water table, depth and intended use such as a car park.
Using quizzes and maps together
Read a mind map first, then test yourself. The quizzes include Soils test and Geotech II - Chapter 16. Note which questions you miss, go back to the matching map, and repeat. Flashcard decks such as Deep Foundations and Shallow foundations suit short revision sessions.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I start on this page?
Start with a broad mind map such as Foundations or Shallow Foundations, then read the notes on bearing capacity and foundation types. Once you know the basic systems, move to the piling maps and the basement notes. Finish with a quiz to see what stuck.
What do the mind maps cover?
They cover foundation selection, shallow and pile foundations, factors affecting the choice of pile, driven and bored pile construction, settlement, site investigation and basement construction. Several are short and list requirements, types and conditions, so they work well as quick overviews before you read the notes.
Are the resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
Who is this unit suited to?
Most resources are pitched at university level, with a smaller share aimed at professional candidates. Teachers can also use the maps, notes and flashcard decks as ready-made material for lessons or revision. No exams are named in the listed resources.
Which basement resources are there?
There is a note on Top-Down Basement Construction, two Basements flashcard decks, a Basement Construction mind map, and decks on basement waterproofing and top-down basement construction. Together they cover construction sequence, guidance, waterproofing methods and the choices behind them.
What if the topic I need is missing?
Try a nearby title, since many maps use broad names like Foundations or Substructure. If you still cannot find it, you can make your own mind map, flashcards or notes with a free account and use them for your own revision.
