Reading Comprehension

  1. Detail Based Inferences

    • Inference is drawing conclusions based on information that has been implied rather than directly stated and is an essential skill in reading comprehension (Knewton, 2008).
  2. Making Connections

    • Making connections requires students to combine what they are reading with what they already know, to reach into their own personal knowledge and apply it to what they are reading. Good readers make connections with their previous knowledge (IndySOW, 2016).
      • 1) Text connections to oneself: they are associations that readers make between the text they are reading and something that happened in their own lives
      • 2) Text-to-text connections: these are links that students make between the text they are reading and another story they have read.
      • 3) Text connections to the world: are those links that students make between the text and something that has happened in the world
  3. Retelling

    • It is a strategy that facilitates the reconstruction of the meaning of the text. After reading, the student is invited to talk about what they understood (IndySOW, 2016).
      • 1) Presence of the major character(s)
      • 2) Defining characteristics of the characters
      • 3) Problem presented in the story
      • 4) Solution to that problem (or the end)
      • 5) Events presented in sequential order
      • 6) Ability to include only those events important to the story and exclude unimportant events
  4. Asking Questions

    • Asking questions is an understanding strategy that helps students clarify and understand what they are reading, through critical thinking (IndySOW, 2016)
  5. Making Predictios

    • To make a prediction we think about what we already know about the story, and what we think will happen logically below (IndySOW, 2016).
      • Before reading: What will the book be about? Who will be the main characters? What great events will happen in history? Where will the events take place?
      • During reading: How will a character respond to the problem? Who could help the character solve the problem?
      • After reading: Which predictions were correct? What predictions were incorrect? Why were the predictions incorrect?
  6. Associate words with images

    • Let's try to always imagine what we read, because if our brain translates the words into images, it is because we are understanding them, and the images are easier to memorize.
  7. Keep the dictionary close

    • It's about broadening our reading comprehension, and a very important part is having a good vocabulary. When we read a word that we don't understand, let's look it up immediately in the dictionary before we forget it and write down the meaning.
  8. Selective attention

    • It is a process that allows us to carry out an activity continuously without allowing other stimuli or events to distract us. Stimulating attention makes us focus on reading
  9. Synthesis

    • This process allows textual reduction through the identification of main ideas or keywords, generating a recap. It also allows the comparison between details and the discovery of possible relationships of causes and effects that generate an understanding that will allow you to deduce the main components of the text.
  10. Sequence analysis

    • This tip can be achieved by generating cause-effect relationships or between concepts, on the other hand, you can identify the literal information found in the text. Strategies such as information organization schemes, mental or conceptual maps can also be used to reinforce the mental capacity to analyze texts.
