Past Simple Vs Past Continous

  1. El pasado simple nos muestra que una acción estaba en el pasado, no en el presente

    • Los verbos simples pasados regulares tienen - ed al final (e.g. called, played, arrived).
    • Los verbos irregulares tienen una forma diferente, generalmente con un sonido vocal diferente (e.g. wake → woke, break → broke, feel → felt).
      • I woke up early this morning
    • completed or repeated actions
    • Use te verb -ed and did
      • Past Simple Afirmativo
        • Subject + Verb ED + Complement Example: My parents called me yesterday
      • Past simple Interrogative
        • Did + Subject + Verb Example: Did you wake up early this morning?
      • Past Simple Negative
        • Subject + did NOT + Verb Example: My parents didn't call me yesterday.
  2. El pasado continuo nos muestra que la acción ya estaba en progreso en cierto momento en el pasado.

    • También puede mostrar que una actividad estuvo en progreso por algún tiempo, no solo por un momento.
      • We were cleaning the house all morning. (Estuvimos limpiando la casa toda la mañana.)
    • Hacemos el pasado continuo con was o were y la forma ing del verbo
      • Past continuous en afirmativo:
        • Subject + was/were + verb ING + complement Example: She was cooking all morning
      • Past continouos interrogative
        • Was/were + Subject + Verb ING Example: What were you doing this time last year?
      • Past continuous Negative
        • Subject + was/were + NOT + verb ING + complement Example: She was not sleeping when he came home
    • She couldn't come to the party. She was working. (Ella no podía venir a la fiesta. Ella estaba trabajando).
  3. Past progressive = longer action Past simple = shorter action

  4. Multiple Progressive Actions in the Same Sentence: Multiple actions happening at the same time. Example: I was walking home and someone was following me.

    • We don’t know which action started first. We also don’t know which action finished first.
      • We only know that during a certain period in the past these two actions were happening at the same time. We can use more than two past progressive actions in the same sentence, and all these actions were happening at the same time some time in the past.
