TYPES OF PHRASES

1) PARTICIPLES PHRASES
1. Participle is a verb form that can be used as an adjetive. Two kinds of participles are: PRESENT PARTICIPLES and PAST PARTICIPLES.
  1. Examples: a) Smiling, the winner accepted the trophy.
    1. b) The old, dented scooter was still reiable.
2) PARTICIPIAL PHRASES
1. Participial phrase consists of a participle and modifiers or complements the participle has. The entire phrase is used as an adjetive.
  1. Examples: a) Donning her mask, the catcher prepared for the big game.
    1. b) News reported by the tabloids is often fictitious.
3) GERUND PHRASES
1. Gerund phrase consists of a gerund and any modifiers or complements the gerund has. The entire phrase is used as a noun.
  1. Examples: a) My grandfather and his friends enjoy swimming at the beach.
    1. b) The growling of the chained dogs made me uneasy.
4) GERUNDS VS PARTICIPIAL
1. Both end in -ING. Do not confused a gerund, which is used as a noun, with a present participle, which may be used as a adjetive or as a part of the VP.
  1. Examples: a) I hurt my ankle last year skiing in Colorado.
    1. b) I always love skiing in Colorado
5) PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES
1. Adjetival Phrases: Modifies a noun or pronoun
2. Adverbial Phrases: Modifies a noun or pronoun
