Knowledge through intuition

  1. Some writers have drawn attention to things we 'just know' through intuition and have argued that this can be applied to religious interpretations of experiences

  2. A number of theologians and philosophers have claimed that we can know things about religion just from intuition

  3. H.P Owen claimed that we get a grasp on the material world and other people through intuition - we 'just know' that they are real and the same applies to a believers view of God

  4. Owen goes on to treat all religious experiences as forms of knowledge. Gods reality underlies all religious experiences and this arises in many ways

  5. Intuition has 'mediated immediacy' (feels close but not direct knowledge) God would not be the product of reason but encountered through other experiences

  6. This idea is attractive to Christians as it fits in with the bible, the idea that God communicates through nature

  7. The believers knowledge of God is intuitive and needs no further argument

  8. This idea also fits in with the idea of faith, faith is an intuitive response to God
