INTROVERT STUDENTS
Learning styles of introverts
- Introverted students prefer working on their own
- learning style of introverts is "reflective".
- According to Mecchia (2017), the introvert students :
- prefer to work on their own,
- Prefer to be allowed to observe
- Get uncomfortable when they are called out or pressured to answer or speak publicly
- Need to participate in class in a meaningful manner; if not, they will become rather absent minded
- Are influenced by different changes of pace and this requires a lot of readjustment time for them
Lessons fit to introverts
- Encourage asynchronous communication such as writing
- Gives them the chance to have a private space to express their thoughts and ideas in their own way
- Asking the student to respond rather than waiting for him to raise his hand.
- Such as the teacher can do the rotation
- With this rotation, all students will take part in the activities in a certain sequence.
- This will encourage introvert students to be actively involved in the classroom
- Using certain applications that could provide students with the chance to contribute to in-class discussions
- Can also help class engagement and class participation for introverts
- Brings less pressure and can be done individually.
- Example : online activity via Moodle or Kahoot
- Group assignments that work for introverts
- Introvert student may perform in small group
- They will perform well if every members know their own role in groups.
- Giving a different role to each member is an important element in this activity because otherwise, the introvert will be dominated by the strong and expressive extroverts in the group.
- Introverts can help by taking notes, giving ideas
- Speaking and presenting in class
- One common thing introvert students have is being uncomfortable and anxious when called upon in class.
- Public speaking is simply not their strong suit, especially full-class discussions can switch their attention and focus
- Making changes in the way group assignments and presenting in class can bring introverts and extroverts closer together and encourage them to shine in their own unique way.
- Teachers must do the presenting activities in groupping
- Another useful strategy is the “think-pair-share”
- When the teacher ask a question, they can discuss with their partner.
- In this way, they only have to share their answers with their partner, rather than the whole class.
- They will not be ashamed to give their opinions and answers
- Encourage asynchronous communication such as writing
Conclussion
- Teachers must accept introvert students like other normal student so that they do not feel neglected and unappreciated
- Effort of using appropriate mechanisms can help introverts feel appreciated in the classroom
