Democritus (400)
Robert Boyle (1661)
- John Dalton (1803)
- Henri Becquerel (1896)
- Ernest Rutherford (1898)
- Niel Bohr (1922)
- Erwin Schrodinger (1930)
- James Chadwick (1932)
- Proved the existence of neutrons. The neutrons were capable of penetrating and splitting the nuclei of even the heaviest elements, so Chadwick used that capability towards the fission of uranium 235 and led to the creation of the atomic bomb.
- The Schrodinger Equation is "the wave equation of non relativistic quantum mechanics". He showed, through math, that waves can be used to describe electrons in atoms. He also built off of Bohr's model of the atom with the Electron Cloud Model.
- The model depicts the floating motion of the electrons, rather then them having a set path of travel. He determined the probability location of electrons in atoms.
- James Chadwick (1932)
- Electrons do not 'randomly' orbit the nucleus
- The electrons move in specific layers or "energy levels" (3-Dimensional)
- The Bohr Model shows that electrons travel in specified energy levels. He also determined that spectrum lines are produced when electrons move.
- Erwin Schrodinger (1930)
- The model described the atom as a tiny, dense, positively charged core called a nucleus, in which nearly all the mass is concentrated, around which the light, negative constituents, called electrons, circulate at some distance, much like planets revolving around the Sun.
- Niel Bohr (1922)
- While studying the effect of x-rays on photographic film, he discovered some chemicals spontaneously decompose and give off very pentrating rays.
- Ernest Rutherford (1898)
- Dalton proposed that all atoms of a particular element would be the same size and the same mass. Atoms of other elements would have their own unique size and mass.
- Henri Becquerel (1896)
- he believed in the corpuscular theory of atoms agreeing with Democritus and disagreeing with Aristotle.Corpuscular means that air is made up of particles.
- John Dalton (1803)
Born around 400BC
1.All matter consists of invisible particles called atoms. 2. Atoms are indestructible. 3. Atoms are solid but invisible. 4. Atoms are homogenous. 5. Atoms differ in size, shape, mass, position, and arrangement. ->Solids are made of small, pointy atoms. ->Liquids are made of large, round atoms. ->Oils are made of very fine, small atoms that can easily slip past each other.
Discovered the atom between 400-300BC
