Earthquakes Chapter 5
  1. Section 1:Forces in Earth's crust
    1. Types of stress
      1. Tension

        Nota:

        • When rock pulls on the crust and stretches it.
        1. Compression

          Nota:

          • Act of squeezing rock together until it folds.
          1. Shearing

            Nota:

            • Mass being pushed apart.
          2. Kinds of faults
            1. Normal

              Nota:

              • They pull apart along faults.
              1. Reverse

                Nota:

                • They move in opposite directions.
                1. Strike slip

                  Nota:

                  • They slide past each other
                2. Changing eaths surface
                  1. crusts

                    Nota:

                    • Rock gets folded in the crust
                    1. Stretching

                      Nota:

                      • When 2 normal faults move the crust stretches making a fault block mountain.
                      1. uplifting Earths crust

                        Nota:

                        • Plateaus are made when forces in the Earths crust push up a big flat block of rock.
                    2. Section 2:Earth quakes and seismic waves
                      1. Types of seismic waves
                        1. P waves

                          Nota:

                          • First waves-These waves compress and expand the ground. They cause damage to structures and can move through solids and liquids.
                          1. S waves

                            Nota:

                            • Second wave-They vibrate side to side and up and down they shake structures but can not moove through liquids.
                            1. Surface waves

                              Nota:

                              • Surface waves are when p and s waves surface some of them become surface waves and are slower. They can shake the ground and some can shake buildings side to side.
                            2. Measuring Earthuakes
                              1. Mercalli scale

                                Nota:

                                • They record the intensidy of Earthquakes
                                1. Richter Scale

                                  Nota:

                                  • It estimates the total energy of earthquakes after being recorded by the other scales
                                  1. Moment magnitude scale

                                    Nota:

                                    • It records seismic waves to get the magnitude but only works on nearby earthquakes
                                    1. Comparing earthquakes

                                      Nota:

                                      • Magnatude is how much energy is from an earthquake. The higher the magnatude is the worst
                                    2. Locating the epicenter

                                      Nota:

                                      • The epicenter is found by seismic waves. They record the location of the epicenter.
                                    3. Section:3 Monitoring earthquakes
                                      1. Seismograph

                                            1. Creep meters

                                              Nota:

                                              • It is mesured by the movement affected by a wire.
                                              1. Laser ranging devices

                                                Nota:

                                                • This show the distance by deflecting light.
                                                1. Gps satellites

                                                  Nota:

                                                  • It is used by maping from satillites
                                                  1. Tiltmeters

                                                    Nota:

                                                    • They have liquid in a bulb that is records the land.
                                                  2. Reading seismographs

                                                    Nota:

                                                    • They can tell the intensidy of how high the line of ink goes.
                                                    1. Measuring seismic waves

                                                      Nota:

                                                      • They use seismographs to see the motion of an earthquake.
                                                  3. Section 4:earth quake safety

                                                        Nota:

                                                        • We are at high risk because of the plates near the pacific.
                                                        1. Mapping earth quakes

                                                          • These are important because they show the severity of an earthquake.
                                                          1. Historic quakes.

                                                            Nota:

                                                            • Past earthquake may help predict the ones in the future.
