Item 2

  1. Prescribed Criteria

    • Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
      • I have met this requirement because 10 Variables have been made. For instance, bandit_choice=input is a variable in my code. All variables have stored something. For example, the game over=false means that while the game is being run until the user reaches the last part of the game. Game_over=true. My characters journey is impacted by the variables because if they reply with yes or no then a different outcome happens.
        • Add more variables like stamina, armour or hunger which makes the player survival component more realistic. Ensure each variable has a different purpose, such as tracking gold, health, inventory or player progress. Some variables could have determined whether the player survives, while others could simply be dialogue or a small reward.
    • You must have at least two choices for each input (IE. Yes | No, Left | Right, Buy | Sell)
      • There are at least 2 options for each input which can be seen when any text is displayed. bandit_choice demonstrates this with a yes or no. The input makes the user choose an option which will give them a different outcome. This can be seen from the tickling weapon choice as if you pick up the gold then you die but if you don't you gain a tickling weapon. The ending is based on the multiple-choice input as if you choose the village, you have a chance of peace whereas choosing the castle is extremely chaotic.
        • Include more options for each input such as hide, negotiate or explore. Allow different choices to lead to an even more distinct story path or consequence. Create endings that are very different, such as becoming a king, hero or losing the castle.
    • You must use a WHILE loop
      • The games inputs were all inside a while loop as at the start this was declared and it ran until the end of the code.
        • Include extra events, encounters and decisions inside the while loop which will make the game more interesting.
    • You must use variables that match your storyline
      • Each variable was related to an in-game resource or status which can be seen as there is a weapon durability input and a health status.
        • Choices could heavily decrease or increase health, gold or inventory items which depend on the players actions.
  2. Ideas for story

    • Add Health Counter
      • Could be shown at the start, before a battle and at the end.
    • Weapon Durability
      • After a battle your sword loses health and breaks. You must find a new weapon!
    • Time limit
      • Give a player a time limit to make it more challenging.
    • Backtrack
      • If you finish a path or mess up you can choose to restart and go back.
  3. Self-Determined Criteria

    • Create a memorable lesson for the user.
      • It gives 2 options: fight or run. This means that the player has control over the outcome of the story. This can be seen as choosing to fight the dragon or run-away results with a different outcome and ending. The game is completely text based and requires the player to choose between a multiple-choice output like a forest or castle. Different choices result in different outcomes like defeating the dragon, escaping safely, or becoming the king. These distinct endings make the game more enjoyable and encourages replayability.
        • Add more enemies and encounters where players must decide when to run and fight. Introduce various locations, quests and characters to expand the storyline. Ensure that player choices have larger consequences which will affect the ending even more.
  4. Existing Text Based Adventure Games

    • PlanetFall
      • Amnesiac Space cadet Crash landing on a deserted planet. Ship? Destroyed! You must explore to survive.
        • Strengths
          • Accesibilty, and Character depth.
        • Weaknesses
          • Annoying Puzzles and a Linear story.
    • Hitchikers guide to the galaxy
      • Based on Douglas Adams' Famous scif-fi Comedy Book. You play as a character called Arthu dent who has house was demolished to make way for a highway, only to find out earth is being destroyed by aliens.
        • Strength
          • Funny text and it introduced interactive fiction.
        • Weaknesses
          • Extremely Difficult
  5. Coding constructs

    • FOR Loops
      • Run block of Code multiple times automatically.
    • If statements
      • Make user choose between different paths on a condition.
    • Function
      • Named block that does 1 specific job.
    • While loop
      • Loop Keeps running as long as condition is true.
    • Input/Output
      • How program Talks to the user.
  6. Algorithim Constructs

    • Modularisation
      • Splitting Code into Separate Parts
    • Iteration
      • Iteration is also called repetition and is used when something is repeated over and over again, so the program goes round in a loop
    • Selection and Condition
      • A selection statement uses a condition to select which line of the program will be used next.
    • Assignment
      • When we store the value of an expression in a variable.
    • Sequence
      • A set of instructions that are processed one after the other.
