Robot Challenge

  1. Task Requirements

    • Self- Determined Criteria
      • LIght
        • Display a smiley face at the end.
        • Display a sad face at the beginning.
      • Movement
        • Spin at the end.
      • Sound
        • Say "Well Done!" at the end.
        • Say "Welcome" at the beginning.
    • Prescribed Criteria
      • Follow a safe path to the exit.
        • Follow the black line on the mat.
        • When the robot senses green, turn left.
        • When the robot senses red, stop moving.
        • When the robot senses an obstacle, navigates around the edge.
      • Use sensor to identify any dangers or obstacles.
        • Use a distance sensor to detect an obstacle.
        • Use a force sensor to detect pressure if the robot hits an obstacle.
      • Use sensor(s) to avoid or manoeuvre any dangers or obstacles.
        • When an obstacle is detected, navigate around the hedge to avoid it and continue following the path.
        • When an obstacle is detected, move forward to push it away from the pathway.
      • Complete a room-specific challenge.
        • Navigate the hedge without touching it, then return to the pathway and keep following it until it reaches the exit.
        • Move the obstacle away from the pathway and reach the exit.
  2. Spike Prime Robot

    • Distance Sensor
      • The Distance Sensor measures the distance to an object or surface using ultrasound.
        • It works by sending out high-frequency sound waves that bounce off any object in range, and measuring how long it takes to return to the sensor.
    • Colour Sensor
      • A Colour Sensor detects, measures, and identifies the colour of objects by analysing reflected or ambient light.
    • Motors
      • Large Motors
        • Large Motors provide high power and torque to drive wheels and move heavy loads.
      • Medium Motors
        • Medium Motors offer a compact, fast-responding design with precise control, ideal for driving smaller attachments and steering mechanisms.
    • Touch & Force Sensor
      • By detecting physical contact and pressure, the touch sensor captures environmental input to direct the robot's actions.
        • This condition prompts the robot to alter its function.
    • Rotation Sensor
      • The rotation sensor allows both motors to track their exact speed and position in real time for precise movement and feedback.
  3. Coding Constructs

    • FOR Loop
      • A For Loop is used when it is known exact.ly how many times to go around the loop
        • FOR 3 steps MOVE forward ENDFOR
    • Arrays
      • It stores a collection of multiple items under a single variable name.
        • Let players = [Sofia, Connie, Macy] Let scores = [10, 20, 30]
    • IF
      • An IF statement runs a block of code only if a condition is true.
        • IF the robot senses green Then turn left
    • IF ELSE
      • An IF/ELSE statement adds a backup plan: it runs one block of code if the condition is true, and a different block of code if it is false
        • IF the robot senses green Then turn left ELSE follow the black line
    • WHILE Loop
      • A While Loop is used to repeat while a condition is true or false. These can be used as forever loops where required.
        • WHILE object distance GREATER THAN 5cm MOVE forward ENDWHILE
    • Variables
      • It stores, retrieves, and manipulates data in a computer's memory.
        • Age=14 player_name=Sofia
    • Loop
      • A loop is a programming construct that allows a section of code to be executed repeatedly.
        • Forever Repeat 10 Repeat until
  4. Algorithm / Pseudocode constructs & language

    • Sequence
      • Sequence refers to a set of instruction that are processed one after the other.
        • 1. Preparation 2. Pack the bag 3. Put on the shoes 4. Open and close the door 5. Walk towards the school
    • Iteration/Repetition
      • Iteration is used when something is repeated, so anything where the program goes round in a loop.
        • FOR
          • FOR 3 steps MOVE forward ENDFOR
        • WHILE
          • WHILE object distance GREATER THAN 5cm MOVE forward ENDWHILE
    • Selection & Condition
      • A selection statement uses a condition to select which line of the program will be used next.
        • IF condition THEN Statements END IF
    • Assignment
      • Assignment is storing a value in a variable.
        • DECLARE player_name SET player_name TO Sofia
  5. Planned responses / routes

    • Rockfall Challenge
      • Follow the path to the exit by pushing the obstacle out of the way
        • Colour Sensor
          • It measures light reflection to detect colour.
        • Distance Sensor
          • It measures the distance between the robot and an obstacle before the robot pushes.
    • Poison Ivy Challenge
      • Follow the path to the exit without touching the hedge/obstacle
        • Colour Sensor
          • It measures light reflection to detect color.
        • Distance Sensor
          • It measures the distance between the obstacle and the robot without touching it.
