Injection Moulding
  1. Injection Moulding is a commercial manufacturing process. The process requires pressure to force the thermoplastic into a mould. Complex shapes can be produced by injection moulding.
    1. Injection moulding typically produces products such as buckets, chairs, telephone cases and bottle caps. The typical plastic used is PS(polystyrene), Nylon, PP(polypropylene) and PP(polythene).
      1. Advantages
        1. A variety of coloured plastics can be used
          1. High production rate with good quality finish
            1. Intricate moulds can make complex shapes
            2. Disadvantages
              1. The moulds are expensive
                1. Setup costs are very high
                  1. Can only run high volume productions
                  2. Process
                    1. 1. The hopper holds the plastic coloured granules, which then fall onto the Archimedean screw.
                      1. 2. This screw rotates and the plastic is passed through the heater.
